The NGO Directory of South Eastern Europe, a directory of West Balkan Environmental Civil Society Organisations (ECSOs), which is published in December 2006 by the Regional Environmental Center (REC was established in 1990 by the United States, the European Commission and Hungary) and funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) shows, that many of these groups are quite young, being formed in the main after the year 2000. This growth rate in building a modern, environmental civil society throughout these young countries reflects the change in everyday life in the recent years in the Western Balkans. The survey in this directory shows, that Bosnia and Herzegovina with 88 Environmental Civil Society Organisations (20,2%) is second in number of ECSOs (the first is Serbia with 114 ECSOs or 26,2%), but in number of members with 54.628 or 41,5% outnumbers all other countries a lot (the second is Serbia with 35.434 members or 26,8%). A good starting situation for Bosnia and Herzegovina to position itself to the tourist market as the “Montana or Colorado of the Balkan countries”.
In consideration of the large number of Environmental Civil Society Organisations in Bosnia, we decided to list just these local NGOs, which care about the protection of the wealth and untouched beauty of the Unac & Una valley, the upper Neretva valley and the Drina & Sutjeska valley.
