Cherries, figs & Co from the Laksevine fruit growers

The Tresnja Produkt cooperative is in Laksevine, not far from Mostar, and was founded in 2002 to boost local agriculture. It now has 130 members, who cultivate 265 hectares, growing indigenous varieties of grapes, cherries, figs and pomegranates. The restoration of these indigenous varieties is helped by the cooperative’s nursery which propagates plants for the local market as well as its members. The cooperative gives its members technical assistance on renovating vineyards and orchards that suffered war damage and on new plantings. The wine comes from the Zilavka grape and is sold locally. The cooperative is a partner of the Cefa NGO, which works for the development of organic and integrated pest management farming systems; this alliance has led to several producers already benefiting from organic certification.
The Laksevine fruit growers are member of the Terra Madre network with 1.600 small Food Communities in 150 countries which is supported by the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity.
